Mehndi is a very beautiful and traditional art.It is believed that the propagators of this ancient art were the Mughals.In mughals period the royal families use mehndi to decorate themselves.The designs of mehndi also called patterns at that time were intricately designed by special artists and beauticians.

In todays world,mehndi have its own significant role and importance.It depicts love,fertility,wisdom,spiritual enlightenment and good fortune.It is prepared from the plant called heena (lawsonia inermis) whose leaves are crushed after drying and then paste is prepared which is apllied to skin.The natural dyeing properties found in heena are tannis.Various shades are obtained by mixing it with other plant such as indigo.For enhancing the color and longevity of design tea,coffee,cloves,tamarind,sugar and various oils can be used.

The art of mehndi varies from region to region which makes it possible to recognize distinctions in cultural styles.Arabic mehndi in middle eastern areas have floral,large patterns on hands and feets whereas Indian mehndi uses fine lines,paisley patterns which covers entire hands,feets,forearms and shins.
